Engr. Abdullahi Babanya

Engr. Abdullahi Baba Babanya MNSE holds BEng & MSc in Aeronautical Engineering from the Riga Aviation University of Latvia since 1995. Prior to his appointment to the position of a Director at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), he served as the General Manager (Engineering) in the defunct Accident Investigation Bureau (now NSIB) since 2017. He is concurrently serving as the AIG Focal Point of the ICAO USOAP CMA for Nigeria. He is the pioneer Chairman of Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA) Technical Committees (TC1 & TC2). He is an ICAO trained Instructor and Course Developer.
In 2022-2023, he was seconded to assist the Republic of Sierra Leone in establishment of a start-up Sierra Leone Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau (SL-AAIIB), development of technical manuals and to guide the SL-AAIIB towards ICAO USOAP CMA audit which took place in May-June 2023. In the past 27+ years, he had the privilege of working as an Airline Engineer, Aircraft Engineering Instructor, Government Airworthiness Inspector, Airline Safety & Quality Manager and lastly Aircraft Accident Investigator.
Over the years, he acquired extensive knowledge and experience in safety and quality management system, certification and safety oversight of airlines/MROs and lastly, aircraft accident and incident investigation. He holds an aircraft engineer’s license with type ratings in B737-300/4/5 and DHC8-400. He is happily married and blessed with extra-ordinary children. In addition to English, he is fluent in Russian language and loves travelling round the world.
