NSIB HOLDS PRESS BRIEFING ON TRAIN DERAILMENT AT ASHAM TRAIN STATION
ABUJA, NIGERIA

[Abuja, Nigeria, September 2, 2025]

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has announced that the preliminary report on the recent Abuja-Kaduna train derailment will be ready and submitted to relevant authorities by September 25, 2025. This was disclosed to journalists yesterday by the Director General of NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., at a press briefing in Abuja yesterday
Recall that on 26 August 2025, at approximately 11:07 hours, a passenger train operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) with eight coaches and two locomotives, operating the Abuja–Kaduna service (AK1), registration CDD5C2 2701, derailed at Asham Train Station.
Out of 583 passengers and crew, 12 sustained minor to moderate injuries; no fatalities were reported. The derailment caused significant damage to tracks, sleepers, and switching mechanisms, leading to a temporary suspension of services along the corridor.
Key areas under investigation include the track infrastructure, specifically examining the track geometry, switches, and the switching mechanism at Asham Station. Additionally, the rolling stock, such as the locomotives and coaches, will undergo a technical inspection to check for any mechanical failures. Operational records, including maintenance logs and operational data, will also be scrutinised to assess any potential oversight or issues. Furthermore, data from onboard systems, such as speedometers, CCTV, and over-speed trip mechanisms, will be analysed to determine whether any technical malfunctions contributed to the incident. Witness accounts from passengers, crew members, and emergency responders will also be gathered to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the event.
Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
