Transportation Specialist

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated transportation researcher with excellent data science, report writing, and public speaking capabilities, and a strong interest in improving the safety of the traveling public in creative and meaningful ways.

As a Transportation Specialist (Safety Research) Direct-Hire, GS-2101-14, you will perform the following major duties:

  • Design, plan, and initiate research, and conduct studies of risk factors or hazards that influence the causes, incidence, and costs of transportation accidents, injuries, or injury severity.
  • Conduct evaluations of the effectiveness of safety countermeasures, such as policies, programs, and technologies, at reducing transportation accidents, injuries, or injury severity.
  • Serve as the project manager and technical lead for safety research studies, reports, and recommendations.
  • Compile, prepare, and publish annual transportation accident data statistical reports to inform and educate on transportation safety.
  • Participate in accident investigations in all modes of transportation to provide data and statistical analysis, and technical consultation on study design and methods, and data visualization, analysis, and interpretation.

Qualifications

GS-14: You MUST have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector). Specialized experience is defined as:

  • Experience conducting quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, applying descriptive, correlational, or experimental study designs, and using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to derive insights from transportation accident, injury, and other safety data.
  • Experience conducting specialized data queries, visualizations, and statistical analyses using Structured Query Language (SQL) and Python, R, or SAS.
  • Experience writing and publishing or peer reviewing descriptive studies (e.g., surveys, qualitative evaluations, systematic literature reviews), observational studies (e.g., case-control and cross-sectional studies), or meta-analyses.
  • Experience using oral and written communication skills to clearly communicate research study results and safety recommendations in plain language to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
