NSIB–RAIB Technical Visit | Derby, United Kingdom

[Abuja, Nigeria, February 26, 2026]

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) recently undertook a strategic technical visit to the UK’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) in Derby as part of our ongoing institutional capacity-building programme under the NSIB Act 2022.
This engagement focused on:
🔹 Peer Review of Frameworks – Benchmarking investigative methodologies, operational procedures, and quality assurance systems against established global best practices.
🔹 Capacity Development – Exposure to RAIB’s investigation facilities, evidence handling protocols, human factors integration, data recovery techniques, and specialist training architecture.
🔹 Safety Investigation Training Partnerships – Exploring structured collaboration in rail and track-vehicle accident investigation training, simulation exercises, and investigator competency development.
🔹 Regulatory & Systemic Learning – Understanding how independent accident investigation findings inform safety recommendations, regulatory refinement, and systemic risk mitigation in rail transportation.
The visit reinforces NSIB’s commitment to strengthening its Rail Accident Investigation Unit through the adaptation of tested investigative frameworks aligned with international standards. By engaging with mature investigative bodies such as RAIB, NSIB continues to upscale its technical depth, operational independence, and analytical capability in support of safer rail operations across Nigeria.
This collaboration represents a significant step toward harmonising investigative practice, enhancing investigator proficiency, and embedding a proactive safety culture within Nigeria’s rail transportation system.
We appreciate the professionalism and openness of the RAIB team in facilitating this knowledge exchange.
